International visitors who are in the U.S. on a J-1 visa are all required to have a minimum level of health insurance coverage. See the “Insurance” section of the EWC J-1 Visitor webpage for complete information.

Important: If you have a medical emergency or require immediate assistance due to an accident or injury, please call 911 and, if possible, notify your EWC program coordinator. In addition, if the resources outlined below do not accommodate your needs, please talk with your EWC program Coordinator. The EWC may have resources that can help.

Bring your insurance ID card and a picture ID card with you to all in-person medical appointments.  Note:  If you need to see a physician specialist (e.g., dermatologist, neurologist) and do not know one in Honolulu, the easiest method may be to request a referral from one of the staff physicians at the University Health clinic or Straub Doctors on Call. Dental Considerations and Services

You are strongly encouraged to take care of your dental health before coming to the U.S. since the dental services here tend to be very expensive and your health insurance, if paid for by the East-West enter, does not include dental care (if interested in dental insurance, you may consider UH’s student plan through HMSA, to which Dental coverage can be added). Below are some other dental clinic options for low-income individuals:

Note:  This is a dental service available to low-income individuals.  Emergency “walk-ins” are accepted for people in pain.  However, you need to arrive by 7:45AM or you will likely be unable to see a dentist that day.  A picture ID must be brought showing evidence of your last 3 months of income such as monthly stipend/pay stubs, current tax return, or bank account statements showing monthly income deposits.  From this information the clinic will determine the cost of services provided to you.
